Advice for other NAU students

For anyone considering studying abroad at the University of Sussex, my biggest piece of advice is to leave campus as much as you can. This campus is very similar to NAU and I found that especially when I have a lot of school work to do I would stay in my room or at the library without leaving campus for a few days. This would put me in a slump and I would feel like I wasn’t appreciating my time abroad enough. So, I suggest trying to leave campus as much as you can on weekends and a few times during the week. Some of my favorite activities are to go shopping in the Brighton lanes or Churchill square or watch the sunset at the beach. Basically, go to Brighton! The city is so easy to walk around and there are so many cute stores to check out. If you are more of a nature person I suggest going to the Seven Sisters cliffs in Seaford (you can take a bus or train to get here). Another huge bonus of studying at the University of Sussex is that the campus is located right in the middle of a huge nature preserve and park called Stanmer park. You can walk in any direction on campus and end up in the park. I loved going here to clear my head for walks. They also have cows here that are super cute, as well as a cafe and restaurant in the park if you want to stop for food. So, my biggest advice is try to experience as much of Brighton as possible because it really is a great city to live in.

Some extra pieces of advice:

If you plan to take the train a lot, get a railcard! You will save a lot of money in the long run. Another option is to book train tickets with at least 3 people to get a group discount.

Utilize the student discounts for the bus! Download the app and sign up with your student ID.

Leave room in your suitcase for shopping while you are here. There are so many great stores in the lanes and you will definitely want to bring some keepsakes home.

As for academic advice, I suggest starting your finals in advance so that you do not have to cram at the end.

Use the 3 week spring break (if you come during the spring semester) to travel. Book trips far in advance for the cheapest prices.

Watch out for seagulls! There are so many seagulls at the University of Sussex and in Brighton, and they are NOT afraid of humans. If you are eating any food in the open, stay alert. One of my friends was eating a burrito and a seagull swooped in and tried to take it! I have seen this happen many times at the beach as well.
