The University of Sussex is not directly in the Brighton city center. It is actually located in the town of Falmer which is about a 15-25 minute drive from Brighton, depending on traffic. So, in order to get to the city, you need to take the train or the bus. In this post I'll explain what I have learned about public transportation in Brighton :)

Train- Train tickets can be bought online beforehand (Trainline app) or you can buy them at a touchscreen kiosk located at the station. The Falmer train station is actually located right at the southern end of campus so it's easily accessible. From where I live in Brighthelm, it is about a 15 minute walk. Almost like walking from north to south campus at NAU. The train ride into Brighton is only about 10-15 minutes, which is very nice. Tickets are also very cheap, only a few pounds for round trip or one way. However, one drawback of the train is that it only runs about every 30 minutes, so if you don’t look at the times beforehand you might be waiting a while. Also because the station is at the very southern end of campus, it is not the most convenient if you have a lot of things to carry.

Bus- My preferred travel option so far has been the bus. There are usually lots of bus stops on campus, but currently the University of Sussex is doing some major construction work and a lot of the bus stops are out of service. However, the bus stop is still closer than the train station and the bus comes about every 5-10 minutes (even at night which is great!). You can buy bus tickets online using the Brighton and Hove bus app or you can pay with a card or ApplePay when you get on. If you sign up on the app using your student ID, you can also get special discounted bus tickets. This includes a 4 pound ticket that is valid for 24 hours, which is a really great deal. Also, something fun is that all the city buses here are double decker!

This is one of the bus routes the comes onto campus!

My friend and I on a local bus. This one is cool because it has a table on the upper level!
